The 'New' Silver (a.k.a. Silver-filled)

The cost of precious metals, like gold and silver, used by jewelry artisans can be quite expensive, and subsequently that cost is passed on to the consumer.  In this era of rising metal costs, jeweler's have begun to seek alternatives, and one such alternative to sterling silver, is "silver-filled" - or as we call it, "new silver."

Much like the gold-filled we purchase when solid gold seems too expensive, silver-filled is a cost effective alternative as well.

View the difference with the following  picture from the Fire Mountain Gem's website. The wire on the left is silver-filled while the wire on the right is silver-plated.  Notice that the silver-filled wire has a thicker layer of silver. Either a 5% or 10% layer of sterling silver is bonded to (filled with) a copper or brass alloy. It is not the same as silver-plated in which a very thin layer is laid on top of a copper or brass core.

Silver-plated metals are not as durable and in time, will wear off and expose the underlying metal. With silver-filled, the layer is sufficient enough to handle small damage without exposing the alloy, and will not wear off.

Sterling silver is defined as 92.5% pure silver. With silver-filled metals, the manufacturer will label it as 95/5, 90/10, .925/10, .925/5, 1/10th or 1/20th.  Notably, if one is allergic to silver-plated jewelry but can wear sterling silver, one should be able to wear the silver-filled without causing a reaction.

Due to the rising cost of sterling silver, Cliptomania's jewelry manufacturers have made this  'New Silver' a viable economic alternative to help us offer fine silver jewelry at a fraction of the cost. We've taken advantage of these opportunities to bring this saving to our customers. If you are a frequent sterling silver shopper on our website, you may have noticed that some earrings have been restocked these past months but in the new silver with a subsequent price decrease. We are happy to pass this savings on to you.

Happy Mother's Day!

This year in the United States Mother's Day is
Sunday, May 13, 2018

It's a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mother's on society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, yet most commonly in March, April and May. In most countries, Mother's Day is a recent observance derived from the holiday as it has evolved in America.  When it was adopted by other countries and cultures, it was given different meanings, associated to different events (religious, historical or legendary), and celebrated on a different date or dates. Some countries already had existing celebrations honoring motherhood that could be traced back to ancient festivals like the Greek cult to Cybele, the Roman festival to Hilaria, or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration.

Their celebrations have adopted
several external characteristics from the U.S. holiday, like giving carnations and other presents to your own mother.  The extent of the celebrations varies greatly. In some countries, it is potentially offensive to one's mother not to mark "her" day.  In others, it is a little-known festival celebrated mainly by immigrants, or covered by the media as a taste of foreign culture.

We think mother's are special and deserve a day of honor and appreciation. So, this year why not celebrate your mother by giving her beautiful earrings from any of our over a dozen catagories including Gemstones & Pearls, Tomorrow's Heirlooms, Nickel Free and more! Do you have something specific you would like to find?  Try our Advanced Search feature (an elongated bubble under the website name) feature to look by designer, size, key word, etc. With over 15 years experience in non-pierced, clip-on earrings, we carry nice selections, including sizes from Pretty & Petite to the Big & Bold and everything in between.  Not sure what colors are in for Spring and Summer? We can help. Visit Spring & Summer Style Guide to get information on current earring trends and fashion color forecast.

Together, we'll make your mother smile.

https://www.cliptomania.com/ has over 24 pairs of Chipita hand-sewn, hand-beaded non-pierced clip on earrings in stock! Many of them are the vintage styles, in buttons and dangles, that are no longer being made in favor of leaner styles like those in the Chipita 21st Century category.

Vintage Chipita

Excerpt from Meet The Designers:
In the fashion world, “Chipita Accessories” has become synonymous with long, sparkly earrings made of semiprecious stones, cut crystal, silver, gold, brass, glass and ceramic beads.  While her current creations are styled to complement contemporary fashion, this largely self-taught artist began her career by designing jewelry with Southwestern and Native American motifs.  Still, as the company’s main designer, Joan says the semi-precious stones dictate the jewelry’s final form, whether art deco, African, Eastern ethnic or Victorian.

Nickel-Free Earrings for Sensitive Ears (Revised & Reposted)

NF93

Cliptomania.com knows there are many people with mildly to moderately "sensitive ears” due to an allergic reaction to nickel commonly found in earrings. "Nickel Free" clip-on earrings are a comfortable, affordable alternative to wearing regular earrings.  Many of the alloys used in jewelry contain nickel. What is nickel?  Nickel is a chemical element, pre-eminently an alloy metal, used in many other alloys, such as nickel brasses and bronzes, and alloys with copper, chromium, aluminum, lead, cobalt, silver, and gold.

NF45

All metals contain nickel, at least as impurities.  Fifteen percent of the population experiences an allergic reaction to nickel.  These sensitized people may show an allergy to nickel affecting their skin, known as dermatitis. Sensitivity to nickel may also appear in patients with pompholyx.  The reaction is not to the nickel itself, but the metallic salts created when the metal comes into contact with perspiration.  Nickel allergies affecting ears are often marked by itchy, red skin. Many earrings are now made nickel-free due to this problem allowing those who experience this sensitivity to comfortably wear jewelry again.

With this in mind, Cliptomania.com continues to offer dozens of Nickel-Free clip on earrings styles, as well as the best variety of non-pierced hoops, gold, sterling silver, bold, designer, and lead-compliant earrings for children over the age of four. Cliptomania.com!  An Internet store exclusively devoted to quality non-pierced earrings since 1999.
